The appearance of the house is very important. In addition, the paint plays not only a decorative, but also a protective function. Painting a wooden house will increase its service life and protect it from negative environmental influences. Before starting work, it is important to carefully study the technology and choose the right materials.
Material selection
Over time, the tree ages. This process occurs even if all conditions for the manufacture and operation of structures are met. Destruction occurs under the influence of those factors, which are almost impossible to eliminate by fasting:
- Weathering. Cold air negatively affects the condition of the wood.
- Ultraviolet radiation. The sun destroys the organic compounds of the material.
- Precipitation. Moisture is terrible for wooden structures due to the fact that moistened wood is an excellent environment for the reproduction of various microorganisms. It has the necessary nutrients, water, and at a favorable temperature, the destruction process is especially fast. That is why it is important not to forget about the do-it-yourself processing of all elements from wood with antiseptics. Only this will allow to correctly reduce the risk of destruction.
- Insects. Another problem that is very difficult to deal with. It will never be possible to eliminate all insects that can damage wood around the house. Therefore, it is important to monitor the condition of structures and resolve such issues in time.
A wooden house can be made of various materials. For a log home, the above problems are especially relevant. In the construction of glued beams, the characteristics of the material allow for greater stability, but the surface still needs protection. For this material, such characteristics are especially relevant, because because of the even attractive surface, many owners prefer not to sheathe the house.
Painting the facade of the house from glued beams or other material can be performed using the following compositions:
- antiseptics (impregnation);
- acrylate based paints;
- oil-based paints.
In addition to these methods of protecting wood, there are other safe means. Oils based on natural oils reliably protect the tree from insects and are absolutely harmless to people and the environment.
To decide how to paint a wooden house outside, it is necessary to consider the features of each of these compounds.
Antiseptic impregnation
Such solutions are characterized by high ability to penetrate deep into the wall of glued beams. This allows you to protect not only the outer surface, but also the inner part of the structural element from damage by mold and fungus. Protection is carried out not only from microorganisms, but also from atmospheric moisture.
Among antiseptics, two types can be distinguished:
- Cover. In addition to the impregnating function, it allows you to give the wood a certain color. The tree is painted lean. The important thing is that such a composition allows you to maintain the original texture. When using a smooth glued beam, this is not relevant, but it matters when painting ordinary or log walls. The composition will reliably protect the hay for 5-7 years, after which it will be necessary to update the coating.
- Lessing destination. The compositions are characterized by a transparent coating color. Best suited in cases where there is a desire to maintain the original appearance of the wood. The service life of this coating is 5 years.
Painting a wooden house with antifungal compounds is a necessary minimum. It is quite simple to do this job with your own hands, the technology does not require special skills. Which of the two proposed compositions to choose in order to paint the facade of the house depends only on the wishes of the future owner.
Acrylate paints
Painting the facade of the house with acrylic-based compounds will be best when the environmental factors, such as high humidity and precipitation, are exposed to a strong surface. This option for processing walls of glued beams and other materials with your own hands has the following advantages:
- color fastness;
- attractive appearance due to the pleasant shine of the surface;
- durability, service life is up to 10 years (allows you to reduce the frequency of facade repairs);
- high vapor permeability (wooden houses or buildings from glued beams are chosen precisely for their ability to "breathe", but some finishing materials impede the movement of air, and there is a need for additional ventilation of the premises);
- the elastic structure of the coating allows it to adapt to deformations of wood.
Oil paints
If the question is, what type of coating is best to choose in order to provide maximum home protection from atmospheric precipitation, the oil paints will be the answer. Such compositions are very popular when processing walls of glued beams or logs. They are well absorbed into the wood, which ensures high quality adhesion to the surface and reliable protection of the walls from negative factors.
But such coatings have disadvantages, which include:
- drying during the day (if you need to paint the facade of the house in a shorter time, it is better to give preference to other paints);
- loss of gloss over time, which negatively affects the appearance of the structure.
If you paint a wooden house from glued beams with oil paint, then the service life of the coating will be up to 6 years. In this regard, oil compositions are inferior to those made on the basis of acrylic.
Paint recommendations
To paint the facade of the house, you need to perform preparatory measures, which are as follows:
- A tree or a wall of glued beams is cleaned of dust, dirt and other small elements on the surface. It is best to do this work with water. To do this, use a medium-hard brush and a garden sprayer, which qualitatively remove dirt from the surface prepared for painting.
- Special solutions need to get rid of mold. To find it is easy, you just need to inspect the walls of the house for the presence of gray-blue spots.
- To remove the resin from the wood, you should take a spatula made of metal. After the resin is removed, a small hole remains from it, it can be repaired with varnish.
- If nails or other metal elements stick out from the surface of the wall, they should be treated with compounds that prevent corrosion.
- After completing the whole range of preparatory measures, the wood is allowed to dry. This process can take about two weeks. To protect the material, it is required to cover the structure with plastic wrap, in which ventilation holes must be provided.
After preparation, painting a new home begins with the application of a primer. It can also have antiseptic properties, which, in addition to increasing the adhesion of the coloring composition to the surface, will protect the wall material from damage. Next, the paint is applied to the dried base in 2-3 layers. Before applying each of them, let the previous dry.
To paint a wooden house, which has long been in operation, you should choose the same compositions that were used previously. Preferably the same manufacturer. If the house needs repair, but was purchased, you will need to determine the type of coating of the external walls. This is quite simple to accomplish. It is worth tearing a piece of coating from the wall to try to twist it into a tube. Elastic acrylate paint will do this, and oil crumble.
If the old layer is made with oil paint, you can do the work with it or use a more durable acrylic based one. For acrylic, only the same type of coating is suitable.
